Today there are many forms of urban communal living; the relatively new term “hall living” involves people residing in large empty spaces which are continuously furnished and used collectively by the residents themselves.
The variant proposed here is a contrast between a large main room and stacked, personal sleeping niches. Based on the theme of classical alcoves, a large space is proposed which exists because of the spatial relationship with numerous smaller units.
The intention is to implement this in a large flat-sharing community.
Inspired by “ZKE”, a pioneering flat-sharing community in Zurich.
